Edward Hoffman

August 2014

Edward Hoffman was a strong supporter of Breath Matter.

"COFFMAN, Edward "Ed" Nathaniel, Ph.D., 72, of Midlothian, Va., formerly of West Point, Va., entered into peace of eternal rest on Thursday, July 24, 2014.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Randolph "Ranny" and Grace Louise Coffman; and his nephew, Brad Hogge. Ed was devoted to his loving family and is survived by his devoted wife, Nell W. Coffman; son, John Taylor (Carey); granddaughters, Morgan, Brooke and Claire Taylor; sisters, Patricia Hogge (Ronnie) and Betty Gale Sibley (Jim); nieces, Shelia Brizendine and Jill Purks; nephew, Steven Hogge; great-nieces, Hannah, Madelyn, Stella and Riley; and great-nephews, Jacob and Joshua. Ed attended Virginia Commonwealth University (R.P.I.), where he obtained his Bachelor of Science and Master's Degree in Business.

Upon graduating, he continued his education at George Washington University, where he received his Ph.D. Dr. Coffman considered it a privilege to teach for 46 years at VCU in the Department of Accounting, where he served a five-year term as Chairman. As a prolific scholar, Dr. Coffman co-authored many academic books, as well as articles in professional journals. He served as a visiting professor to multiple universities, including the University of Nice, Southern Methodist University, University of Hawaii, Swinburne University of Technology in Australia and The Ohio State University. He received numerous recognitions and awards, including the Accountant of the Year in Education Award of Beta Alpha Psi; The Virginia Outstanding Educator Award of the Student Chapter; Institute of Management Accountants of James Madison University; The Outstanding Accounting Educator Award of the Virginia Society of CPA's, only to name a few. Dr. Coffman's association with VCU extended beyond being an educator, he enjoyed his students, the faculty and was an avid VCU Rams fan.

He was a loyal and dedicated member of the First Baptist Church, where he served on the Finance Committee and was a member of the Buddy Hamilton Sunday School Class. Ed was an honorable, kind-hearted man who displayed honesty, integrity and generosity to everyone he knew and met. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed. The family will receive friends 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, 2014 at Bliley's-Central, 3801 Augusta Ave. A celebration of Ed's life will be held 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, 2709 Monument Ave., Richmond, Va. 23220.

Interment will be at 3 p.m., Monday in Sunny Slope Cemetery in West Point, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Ed and Nell Coffman Faculty Endowment Fund (secure link to make a contribution https://www.support.vcu.edu/give/business, select other, type in "Coffman Faculty Fund") or Community Missions, First Baptist Church, Richmond, Va.
